Google confirmed that they started rolling out a core update just before the weekend. Gary Illyes from Google confirmed the update in a tweet.

Take note that Google doesn’t always acknowledge updates, quite often keeping mum on them.
This was a quality type update, and not part of the feared Panda or Penguin algorithms.
As with most new algorithms being implemented, you will see some shuffling in the search engine ranking pages. My advice is to stay patient for a week or so, while things calm down.
